ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Cassandra Vale writes urban paranormal mysteries where the supernatural runs on red tape and the dead are owed better customer service. Her series, The Obsidian Ledger, follows the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs — an agency she insists she did not invent so much as transcribe.
She fell in love with ghost stories in her grandmother’s creaking Victorian house, where the radiators clanked like chains and every closed door was an unanswered question. She’s been leaving doors ajar ever since — in her fiction, anyway. In real life she checks the locks twice.
When she isn’t writing, she can be found walking old cemeteries for the typography, defending her theory that filing cabinets are liminal spaces, and brewing coffee strong enough to wake the subjects of her research.
Subject: VALE, CASSANDRA. Status: active. The following facts are on record with the Bureau.
EXHIBIT A
Writes exclusively between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Claims the sentences “behave better after dark.” Her editor has learned not to ask.
EXHIBIT B
Drafts every book on a 1938 typewriter she bought at an estate sale. The keys occasionally strike letters she did not press. She keeps those.
EXHIBIT C
Collects antique skeleton keys. Owns forty-one. Has yet to find a door any of them open. Remains optimistic. Or worried. Hard to say.
EXHIBIT D
Reads tarot for her characters when she’s stuck on a plot point. The Tower has come up before every major rewrite. She no longer considers this a coincidence.
EXHIBIT E
Her favorite research trip: three nights in a decommissioned records hall, cataloguing century-old complaint letters. Two were addressed to people who hadn’t been born yet.
EXHIBIT F
Believes every city keeps a second set of books. Writes so the rest of us can finally read the margins.
